The Pakistan Super League (PSL) will host the largest change in its history by introducing a new model for Season 11, a player auction system. This will be the first time since the launch of PSL that the league will be moving away from a normal players‘ draft style of pick to a more traditional auction format, like that of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has stated that it wants this new format to provide a more equal playing field, as well as to provide an opportunity for players to play in a more competitive, transparent, and financially rewarding environment.
From Draft to Auction: Why the Change?
Over the last 10 seasons of the Pakistan Super League, teams have chosen players through a draft system based on different categories, which helped to create parity among franchises, but created limitations for salaries because the wage structure was fixed.
Now with the new auction model for selecting players, teams will bid for players at a base price, and players’ value will be determined by market demand, making it possible for top–performing or in-form players to obtain higher salaries.
The PCB called this an “historic development“ in an official statement, highlighting how the PSL shows its commitment to innovation.

PSL Expansion and Rising Commercial Value
With the addition of newly actioned teams that are Sialkot and Hyderabad, the PSL has expanded from six to eight teams. The recent sale of these two franchises for PKR 3.6 billion shows how much the league’s commercial value has grown in recent years.
PCB believes that with an increasing number of teams, players, and money being injected into the PSL, the auction format will allow for better management of talent distribution and competition than the previous model (draft & rankings).
What’s New in the PSL Auction Model?
Some of the major changes have been introduced as part of the new system of HBL PSL Season 11:
1. Fewer Retained Players
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Gold
- Silver
By reducing the number of franchises retaining players, a higher number of high–caliber players will be made available for the auction process and will therefore create an enhanced level of franchise competition and an increase in player prices from auction sales.
2. End of Mentor and Brand Ambassador Roles
The PCB has now abolished the roles of Mentors, Brand Ambassadors, and Right to Match. In the previous seasons of the league, these mechanisms allowed franchises to retain players by offering them additional payments outside the standard contracts. The removal of this makes the system of the league more transparent and also limits the backdoor financial benefits.

3. Special Provision for New Teams
The old teams of the league can only retain 4 players, one from each category, and the remaining released players can be added into the pool, and then the two new teams can retain 4 players from the pool. This system helps all the teams to make balanced teams.
4. Direct Signing of Foreign Players
Now, each franchise is allowed to sign one foreign player directly who was not a part of the PSL Season 10. This helps to bring more internationally talented players into the league. The PCB will determine the contract amount for any player signed under this provision.
How Players Benefit the Most
Under this system, players will see many benefits. With an open bidding process for player contracts:
There will be no fixed salaries according to categories; each player has a base price according to its value, and it is upto management how much they can bid on a player.
In-demand players can earn significantly more
Performance and popularity directly impact earnings
This model also gives emerging players a chance to increase their value if multiple franchises show interest.
What This Means for Fans and the Future of PSL
The new Auction model of the Pakistan Super League can bring more excitement and unpredictability for fans, and there will be more intensity in the rivalry between the teams, as each franchise can make a balanced team.
PSL will increase its competitiveness and international reputation by improving both money earnings and the quality of players in the league, while at the same time providing an environment that supports the continued development of its teams and local talent.
With the PSL getting ready for Season 11, the introduction of the new Auction Model could potentially change the way teams build their squads, greatly affect players’ earning ability, and mark a new beginning for the league.
